Helen Fitzgerald

Helen M. Fitzgerald, 91, of Bloomington, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Jan. 27 at Heritage Health in Normal.

Her funeral will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Bloomington with Rev. _ officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bloomington.  Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Friday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington with a rosary service at 6:00 p.m.

Helen was born Dec. 13, 1923 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Earl and Ethel Walker Roney.   She married John Fitzgerald on April 12, 1947 in Carlisle, Pa.  He preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1987.

Survivors include her children, Rita Conlon and Kevin (Susan) Fitzgerald, both of Bloomington; ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; two sisters, Evie Duncan of Chandler, Ariz. and Joanne (John) Costedio of Sun City, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Terry and Tim Fitzgerald.

Helen received her nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and remained a member of the Mercy Hospital Nurses Association.  In Bloomington, she worked for St. Joseph Hospital, Dr. McGinnis and Heritage Manor Nursing Home.  She became the Bloomington’s first City Nurse and retired in 1981.

Helen was a proud breast cancer survivor and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. 

Helen was a woman of many interests, but above all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
