Trauma center study provides recommendations to fight trauma deserts

By Illinois News Network

CHICAGO – A report about the state’s trauma centers says there are trauma deserts and that most hospitals in central and southern Illinois indicate they’re interested in creating a new tier to increase access to care.

The Illinois Department of Public Health conducted a survey and recommends creating a Level III trauma designation in the state. Currently the state only recognizes Level I and Level II.

IDPH says the Level III designation would be far less costly than operating a Level II. A measure that would have created a Level III designation was kept in committee early last year. The report says the state distributed nearly $5 million in fiscal year 2013 for trauma centers, but Level I and II  centers can cost in excess of $20 million.

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
