BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington eye doctor got an up close look at how diabetics can better manage the disease.
Wilson Movic was one of more than 1,400 patients to take part in a 10-year study about how to manage blood-sugar levels.
Movic told WJBC's Scott Laughlin, the study shows that with good care, diabetics live nearly as long as everybody else. It had previously been reported as seven times higher.
He said diabetics can manage treat their condition with the same lifestyle choices we should all be making.
"I suspect if someone went to their doctor and said what's the right thing to do, they would give them diet and exercise routine they are giving diabetics," Movic said.
The study shows cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death among diabetics, followed by cancer.
"They found out that was because of cigarette smoking," Movic said.
Diabetic complications ranked as the third-leading cause of death among diabetics.
The study's findings are being published in this month's Journal of the American Medical Association.
