NORMAL – The freezing weather couldn't stop Redbird fans Wednesday afternoon from giving the Illinois State University football team a grand farewell as they head for Frisco, Texas and the FCS National Championship.

The Redbirds have a date Saturday with the Bison of North Dakota State University. Doug Lantz is one of many fans who braved the frigid temperatures.

"My wife's an alum from ISU and my daughters and I, we come to a lot of the basketball (and) volleyball games because I have four daughters and two of them are involved in sports, so we come and support the ISU women's programs," said Lantz. "(We) wanted to support the football team. We come to a lot of games and we love it."

Lantz said he'll be watching Saturday's game at a friend's house.

"About 10 of us guys are going to head out there and enjoy the game," said Lantz. "Just incidentally, he happened to be on the 1969 championship baseball team. It's a big deal."

There are many fans who will be headed to Frisco for the game, including ISU alumnus Greg Kocourek.

"I'm a season ticket holder so I've been to all the games," said Kocourek. "I just want to come out and let the team know that we support them."

Also attending Wednesday's send off was State Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington). He said the "great spirit of the Redbirds" is what brought out so many fans.

"This is the first opportunity the school's had in the history of the program to play for the national championship in football," said Brady. "Those are the kind of things that a community comes out for. It shows our pride. It shows our backing for the Redbirds and this great team."

NDSU will be playing for its fourth consecutive title. Pregame on WJBC will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
