SPRINGFIELD – Motorists may drive without an up-to-date vehicle registration sticker under a law that takes effect Thursday.
Secretary of State Jesse White proposed the plan to allow driving with a receipt showing a sticker purchase – even if it hasn't been applied to the license plate yet.
White says thousands of motorists have to visit driver's services facilities to buy updated stickers because they do it in the last few days before old stickers expire. This law allows more online purchases.
In the closing days of October, 104,000 customers bought stickers at facilities. There were 5,000 online purchases.
A motorist must carry an online-purchase receipt in his or her car. It's valid for only a month after the previous sticker's expiration.
