Rauner might rent while mansion repairs are made

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois' governor-elect says he may have to rent a house or condo while the governor's mansion is being fixed up.  

Winnetka Republican Bruce Rauner made the comments during a luncheon in Springfield Tuesday. 

Rauner and his wife Diana have vowed to live in the governor's mansion in downtown Springfield after his inauguration in January. But Rauner says there is work to be done on the structure. It has been the official residence of the governor since 1855, but the two previous governors lived mostly in Chicago.  

The third floor had to be closed this spring because of a leaky roof. Ceilings and walls were damaged and some furniture was moved to a storage facility.  

Rauner has said he plans to use private funding for repairs.
