Firefighters deliver baby in church parking lot

By The Associated Press

WONDER LAKE – A Wonder Lake couple didn't make it to the hospital before their baby was born, but a church ended up doing just fine.

Twenty-five-year-old Crystal Smith and her boyfriend, Travis Vincent, headed for a McHenry hospital around 3:50 a.m. Saturday after Smith began have contractions. But when Smith's water broke on the way, the couple pulled into the Wonder Lake Fire Station parking lot, where she was transferred to an ambulance.

The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald reports that the ambulance ended up stopping at the Maranatha Assembly of God Church because the baby was coming.

Smith gave birth to Kamdyn James Vincent in the parking lot at 4:51 a.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Weber says firefighter-assisted deliveries are unusual, but his crew "couldn't have asked for a better delivery."

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
