SPRINGFIELD – A spokesman for late Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka says a memorial service is being planned for next week.

Topinka died unexpectedly Wednesday at the age of 70 after suffering complications from a stroke. Her passing came just weeks after she was elected to a second term.

Brad Hahn says the Riverside Republican's will was examined shortly after her death. Hahn says while Topinka “made it very clear she didn't want a funeral or a wake'' she included a stipulation in the legal document that her family and friends could hold a memorial service for her following her cremation.

Hahn says Topinka's family and friends are now planning a memorial and are finalizing the details.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
