BLOOMINGTON – The Price Rite Food Mart has had its application for a liquor license denied by Bloomington's liquor commission.
The hybrid convenience store/gas station, located at 706 N. Clinton St. in Bloomington, was seeking a GPBS liquor license which would have allowed for the sale of packaged beer and wine for consumption off the premises. Mayor Tari Renner said the primary concern comes from residents in the area.
"I suggested to the proprietor that he work with the neighbors so that they're not as vehemently opposed," said Renner. "Because it's not just a convenience store out on Veterans Parkway, it's a convenience store surrounded by neighborhoods."
The store had a liquor license in the past, but it was revoked by the state in 2012 due to tax issues. Renner explained the store now has a payment plan with the state and is allowed to seek a license again.
Price Rite Food Mart also applied for a liquor license earlier this year. Renner said the commission actually voted two to one to recommend that license, but then the City Council denied it.
