MATT DRAT FORUM - AIRDATE MAY 5, 2008

Hello this is Matt Drat.

Well it looks like another young celebrity has fallen in the great race for
fame and fortune. Little Miley Cyrus of "Hannah Montana" fame is taking all
sorts of grief for her recent photo shoot in Vanity Fair magazine. Shocking
pictures of a scantily clad Cyrus are causing uproar all over the Disney
universe.

And while the contrite little Disney diva swears she didn’t realize what was
happening, it makes me think about how different her little 15-year-old self
is from the rest of the teenagers in the world … NOT.
What teenager in your life have you heard say they didn’t realize what the
consequences of their actions would be? And so who is really to blame for
Miley's fall from grace.

A couple of months ago, in an interview with Barbara Walters, when asked
how she would keep from falling into the same trap as other young
Hollywood-ites, she shared that her family would be the first to keep her on
the straight and narrow. Well I guess that didn’t work out.

So where was her family? Was Billy Ray to busy trying to revive his own
career to notice that his young daughter was being put into a compromising
situation? All teenagers think they can handle what ever comes their way.
But it takes the firm hand of an adult to help them realize what the realities
of the world are. And sometimes it takes the use of the “N” word. That’s
right the word NO.

Of course teenagers think they can handle anything, and it’s our job at times
to point out that they can’t. That’s not to say that we discourage, but that we
encourage with expectations that provide a safe environment to grow and
mature.

So my hope is that Miley Cyrus can bring herself back from this incident,
because I hate to see any young person deal with that kind thing. But in the
end, we adults need to take the responsibility to mentor those young people
in our lives. And sometimes that means making tough choices.
