Hello this is Matt Drat. Last week our state legislature took up the topic of a
constitutional amendment that would setup a process for the recall of state
constitutional officers. I say that process doesn’t go far enough.
Sure being able to get rid of state wide officers would most likely cause
them to more honest in their campaign rhetoric and make them more
accountable after they are elected. But shouldn’t that be true of all elected
leaders? Case in point is how this legislation is being dealt with in the state
Senate.

Although the resolution was introduced in the state Senate last year by Sen.
Dan Cronin, of Elmhurst, Senate sponsorship of the Recall Amendment has
now been taken over by Sen. Donne Trotter, of Chicago– who recently told
the Chicago Tribune that he considers recall a “stupid” idea. Thisaction is a
perfect illustration of what’s wrong with politics in our state. These kinds of
issues deserve open and honest debate not to be killed without getting its day
in the sun.

While you’re listening to me, this issue may have already been resolved. Or
as has been the history in our state, political expediency may have won out.
Every elected official in our state, no matter what office they hold, needs to
be held accountable for their actions while in office. This amendment sets a
reasonably high standard for the recall of elected officials. If it makes
leaders nervous then my question is this.

If you’re truly serving the people what are you worried about?
