A local insurance worker did all he could to ensure that a pilot would live another day after crashing his plane.
Dan Lane, who works for Country Insurance and Financial Services, recalls traveling near Colona in Henry County last July, when he saw a crop duster fall from the sky and crash into a cornfield.

Lane and four truck drivers, one armed with a fire extinguisher, helped but the pilot out of the wreckage.
Lane credits the pilot for having the presence of mind to land near a highway when he started having engine trouble. The pilot, Patrick Buss of California, has recovered from a broken leg and third-degree burns.
Lane has been nominated for the Carnegie Medal, along with the truckers. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission will announce the winners in this month.
