A Bloomington man and former teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for child pornography charges. Forty-nine-year-old Scott Southerland was arrested by Bloomington police last September and police seized numerous pictures of child pornography at his home in the 14-hundred block of South Oak Street.

The investigation started when Southerland's housekeeper discovered the pictures. At his sentencing this week, Southerland cried as he read a one and a half page statement where he apologized to his parents, friends and an 11-year-old boy whom he videotaped.

He admitted he has had an attraction to young boys since he was a teen but failed to act upon it until 2000 when he got onto the Internet. Southerland was once a fourth-grade teacher at an Olympia school and served as a substitute in several area schools, including Unit 5 and District 87.
