An Amtrak spokesman says the engineer of the passenger train involved in a pedestrian crash last night did all they could to avoid a collision. Marc Magliari says the engineer of the southbound train spotted a person walking along the tracks, south of the Locust Street bridge, east of Morris Avenue at about 7:45 p.m. The engineer sounded the train's horn, but the pedestrian didn't move.

Magliari says the train was traveling at 20 miles an hour when the engineer found the man walking along the tracks -- and then slowed down before the collision.

The pedestrian, 59-year-old George Jones of Bloomington, was taken to BroMenn Regional Medical Center. His condition isn't known. Magliari says the southbound train was delayed nearly an hour-and-a-half because of the crash. The northbound train was held back more than an hour.
