CHICAGO, IL - Prosecutors contend political fundraiser Tony Rezko parlayed his success at amassing enormous amounts of campaign money for Governor Rod Blagojevich into the access and clout to launch a $7 million shakedown scheme. Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Schar gave his closing argument in Rezko's fraud trial Monday.

Schar scornfully dismissed defense claims that Rezko had actually been a responsible businessman. And the prosecutor also claimed Rezko was an important player in a network of corruption deeply rooted in Springfield and Chicago.

Rezko is a real estate developer and fast-food entrepreneur who bankrolled a number of Illinois political campaigns. He denies he had anything to do with any shakedown schemes. The governor isn't charged with any wrongdoing.
