No one can pinpoint an exact reason why it took so long but the groundbreaking was the realization of a long-time goal to move the shelter from the current 150 year-old facility at 212 Roosevelt Avenue to the new, $2.5 million building at the corner of Oak and Jefferson. Director Tom Fulop says it'll. accommodate up to 112 people with expanded dorm rooms, kitchen and dining, plus the shelter will serve as an on-site day center to offer life skills and mental health and employment counseling. Those are currently offered at the Compassion Center at Second Presbyterian Church.

Construction will begin next month and the shelter should be open sometime in the fall.
