Local officials fight to keep Pontiac prison open

The Illinois Department of Corrections concedes that plans to close the Pontiac prison are just that -- plans. DOC spokesman Sergio Molina acknowledges the prison might yet stay open.

But Molina says keeping all of the state's maximum-security prisons open is a drain on taxpayer dollars. And he says the state can house its most dangerous inmates in single cells in Joliet and Thomson -- an option not available at Pontiac.

Pontiac Mayor Scott McCoy says don't start writing the obituary for the Pontiac prison yet.

The Pontiac prison houses more than 1,600 inmates and employs 551 workers.
