PEORIA, IL - Air travelers hoping to get from Central Illinois to Florida will soon have one less option. Allegiant Air says it will cancel its direct service from Peoria to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in May. The route started about five months ago.

The Las Vegas-based airline announced several cuts, including service to Fort Lauderdale from Fort Wayne, Indiana. A news statement from the company offered no reason.

But the Great Peoria Regional Airport Director Ken Spirito says the cuts in service are because of rising fuel prices. The airline says customers who have reservations starting in June will be contacted for other accommodations.
