More toy recalls
03/28/2008 12:15:51

Mega Brands has recalled these magnetic toys.

There's another toy recall but it's a familiar product--more magnetic toys. Cara Smith with the Illinois Attorney General's office says it's hard for parents to monitor which toys are in the toy box, because it seems there's another recall every time you turn around.

Smith wants to remind parents they have one place to turn to stay up to date--the recall hotline. It's staffed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parents can quickly find out if toys are safe, or if they should return them to the company. The hotline number is 888-414-7678.
This latest round of recalls announced earlier this month included: 1.1 million units of Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Preschool Magnetic Toys, and 1.3 million units of MagnaMan Magnetic Toy Figures. The magnets, which were sold by Mega Brands America Inc., can detach and be swallowed by a child or cause a child to choke. Last year, the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Mega Brands America announced a recall for Magnetix Magnetic Building Sets after at least one child's death, one aspiration and 27 incidents of intestinal injuries as a result of swallowing magnets. All but one of these cases required surgery.
Smith says toy recalls doubled from 2006 to 2007, and 2008 is already looking to be a high-volume recall year.
