URBANA - Trustees at the University of Illinois are considering a proposal that would raise tuition for in-state freshmen by nearly 10 percent in the fall. Fees also are slated to go up 6 percent, under the proposal.
Trustees will meet later in the day to consider a plan that includes a 9.5 percent increase in the tuition rate for new undergraduates at the Urbana campus. Tuition is now $4,220 a semester and would go up by about $400. That would bring the yearly costs for tuition, room and board, insurance and fees to more than $20,400. New undergraduates at the U of I's Chicago campus would also see an 8 percent increase, to $18,670. U of I spokesman Thomas Hardy says the increases are needed to meet rising costs and ensure academic quality.
