Durbin: 'U.S. should bring water to the world'

Senator Dick Durbin says the U.S. can take the lead in helping other countries improve the quantity and quality of their drinking water. He says his predecessor, the late Paul Simon, had it right in a book he wrote several years ago called "Tapped Out."
The book foresaw a world water crisis.

Durbin says he does not believe "bringing water to the world" would require a major shift of resources, but he does say more research is necessary.
He points out much of the world's water is salt water and thus not suitable for drinking. As for fresh water, Durbin says 70 percent of it is used for agricultural purposes, and more can be done to conserve its use.
