PEORIA - University High School's football team completed its first undefeated season since 1989 with a 13-7 victory over Peoria Notre Dame on Friday at Peoria Stadium.
Arion Worthman's 59-yard touchdown pass to Noah Larsen with 3:14 remaining in the second half proved to be the difference as neither team scored in the second half.
Notre Dame, which has a 6-3 record, took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on its opening drive as quarterback Dom Comfort scrambled 43 yards for a touchdown.
The Pioneers, ranked fifth in Class 5A and a 9-0 record, countered with a touchdown on a 3-yard pass from Worthman to Malik Wildermuth to cut the deficit to 7-6 after the extra point failed. The 10-play, 64-yard drive was set up by a U-High fumble recovery.
The U-High defense, which has allowed only 13 points in the last five games, stopped Notre Dame on its opening drive of the second half inside the 6-yard line four times.
Worthman led the Pioneers' offense with 134 yards passing on 8 of 15 and rushed for 52 yards on 16 carries. Joe Johnson ran for 93 yards on 15 carries.
