LINCOLN - The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory for Central Illinois from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The precipitation will begin to spread into the area from the southwest after sunrise, although many areas near the Indiana border will not see much precipitation before the afternoon hours. Light ice accumulation is anticipated until temperatures climb above freezing. Temperatures across northern areas may stay below freezing through mid afternoon.
According to WMBD-31 Chief Meteorologist Marcus Bailey, a winter mix of freezing rain and sleet could hang around Central Illinois into the evening hours. Total ice accumulations in the area will average a tenth of an inch or less. Such an amount of icing should not cause damage to trees and power lines, but it will make for very slippery travel even during the daytime hours.
