John L. Barlow

John L. Barlow, 84, of Bloomington, Ill. died at 8:35 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at Bloomington Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.His funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Vaughn Hoffman officiating. Visitation will be held before the service from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Litchfield, Ill., with military honors. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church. Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington is in charge of arrangements. John was born Feb. 6, 1928 in Charleston, Ill., the son of Dr. R.L. Barlow and Genevieve Tiffin Barlow. Survivors include a sister, Mary Genevieve (Barlow) Medearis, Ft. Collins, Colo., sons, John C. Barlow of Valparaiso, Ind., Todd L. (Sandi) Barlow of Bloomington, daughter, Mary Anne Barlow of Scottsdale, Ariz., his companion Rachel Lewis, and her son Corky, and daughter Cindy, grandchildren, Ellen Barlow, Lincoln Barlow, David (Kami Irvin) Barlow, Grace Barlow, and Sam Barlow. His parents preceded him in death. John grew up in rural Hindsboro, Ill. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. and from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Mr. Barlow represented the UpJohn Pharmaceutical Company as a pharmaceutical representative for three years and worked as a retail pharmacist prior to opening John’s Pharmacy, in Sullivan, Ill. in 1964. He later expanded and opened a second drug store in Lovington, Ill. In 1975, Mr. Barlow sold his Pharmacy stores and moved to Bloomington, where he continued employment as a pharmacist until his retirement in 1992. During his retirement years, John worked as a volunteer in the Wesley United Methodist Church nursing home visitation ministry, and often filled in to cover for vacationing pharmacists until 2004. Mr. Barlow’s pharmacy career spanned more than 40 years. During that period, he held various positions on professional boards governing the profession he loved. He served three years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Pharmacists Association and he was elected president of that Association in 1970. In 1969, then Illinois Governor Richard Ogilvie appointed Mr. Barlow to the Illinois State Board of Pharmacy, the regulatory board governing the profession in Illinois. He was elected president of the State Board of Pharmacy in 1970 and continued his service on that Board until 1973. Mr. Barlow was also active in local politics, and served as a member of several civic and service organizations throughout his life. He was a member of Bloomington Lodge 43 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Bloomington. He also served as Governor of the Moose Lodge 745 in Bloomington where he achieved the honorary degree of Fellow. John also served in the United States Army in Korea from December of 1946 until August of 1948. During his tour, he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion Post 635 in Normal and a life member of the VFW Post 454 in Bloomington. Mr. Barlow was an avid fan of both collegiate and professional sports. He enjoyed watching his alma mater Illinois play football and basketball and was a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.

Lois J. Claricoates

Lois J. Claricoates, 92, of Bloomington, Ill. and formerly of Sugar Grove, Ill. died at 1:05 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 at her home. Her memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday (9-15-12) at the Yorkville Congregational United Church of Christ, 409 Center Parkway, Yorkville, IL 60560. Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Macular Degeneration Foundation. She was born April 10, 1920 in Chicago, a daughter of Harry E. and Ruth E. Van de Gaarde Gregory. She married Albert C. Claricoates on May 3, 1942. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1991. Surviving are five children, Susan (Frank) Kigyos of Sugar Grove, Gregory (Carol) Claricoates of St. Charles, Ill., Brent Claricoates of West Willington, CT, Brian Claricoates of Bloomington and Meg Kelly of Yorkville; seven grandchildren, Frank (Diane) Kigyos, Kevin (Dawn) Kigyos, and Jason, Brent, Kristin, Emily and Lori Claricoates; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph (Margaret) Gregory of Bradenton, FL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Mahn.

John William Fishering

John William Fishering, 83, of Normal, Ill. died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012 at his home after a short illness. John was born to Walter and Agnes Loeffler Fishering on April 19, 1929 in Ft. Wayne, Ind. He grew up in Ft. Wayne. He married Lou Ann Kayser in 1950 and they had three children together; John, Kathy and Greg. They moved the family to Denver in 1959. The marriage to Lou Ann ended in 1968. In 1969, John met Diane Rottinghaus and they became lifelong partners beginning in 1970 and marrying in 1988. Together, they experienced many adventures traveling and living in various parts of the country. In addition to living in Denver, they lived in Cambridge, Md. and Nashville, Tenn. before returning to their roots in the Midwest. John spent his years in a number of occupations including working with his Dad in a blacktopping business in Ft. Wayne. He also worked as a national service engineer for Schwing America, ran his own small marina renting sailboats on Cherry Creek Reservoir in Denver, and was a pre-purchase home inspector in Nashville, Tn. The occupation he most enjoyed was working on the Chesapeake Bay as a waterman. He built his own workboat and tonged for oysters, trot lined for crab and shed soft crabs. John leaves behind his wife, Diane; two sons, John (Nancy) Fishering and Greg (Priscilla) Fishering, both of Montrose, CO; and his daughter, Kathy (Michael) Day of Grand Junction, CO. He is survived by his grandchildren, Reid, David, Lindsey, Michelle, Dan, Carolyn and Rachael. His parents and his sister, Mary Ann Feuling preceded him in death. John enjoyed life to the fullest whether he was sailing, making perfect martinis or listening to his favorite jazz artists. John’s greatest love was his wife, children and grandchildren. He cherished every conversation and every minute he had with them. A private memorial service will be held in the future in Nora Springs, Iowa. Barbara A. Snodgrass

Barbara A. Snodgrass, 64, of Carlock, Ill. died at 8:36 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, Ill. Her memorial mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, (9-12-12) at St. Patrick’s Church, Bloomington with Rev. Peter Zorjan officiating. Interment will be private. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Central Illinois or to the animal shelter of the donor’s choice. Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington is in charge of arrangements. Barbara was born on Jan. 9, 1948 in Bloomington, the daughter of Lawrence and Irene Myers Jobe. She married James S. Snodgrass on March 20, 1964 in Springfield. He died on Sept. 13, 2007. She is survived by one daughter, Dawn (Kevin) Kegley, Danvers; one son, James Snodgrass, Kansas City, MO; one granddaughter, Amanda (Dan) Kegley-Zemel, Montgomery; two great-grandchildren, James and Ellie; two brothers, Tim Jobe, Normal and David Jobe, Bloomington; her mother-in-law, Marie Snodgrass, LeRoy; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Barbara was a kind-hearted and giving woman who cared very much about her family.

Dolores M. Trempel

Dolores M. Trempel, 88, of Bloomington Ill. died at 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at Martin Health Center, Bloomington. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday (9-12-12) at Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday (9-11-12) at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington with additional visitation for ½ hour prior to the Mass Wednesday at the church. Mausoleum entombment will be at 1 p.m. Friday (9-14-12) in the Catholic Cemetery at Fort Wayne, Ind. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Matthew 25 Clinic, 413 E. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN 46802. Dolores was born July 16, 1924 in Valparaiso, Ind., a daughter of John F. and Mary M. Holocher Rieger. She married Joseph G. Trempel on October 6, 1945 in Fort Wayne. He survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Linda (Tom) Hubbard of Bloomington and Pamela Cox (Dennis) Mills of Normal; a son, Joe (Peggy) Trempel of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, D.J. (Lindsey) Pequignot, Eric (Sarah) Pequignot, Tom Hubbard, Chris Hubbard, Danielle (Mike) Wallin, Joseph Cox and Tiffany (Joe) Wilcox; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alverda Jones of Fort Wayne, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Susan Pequignot; two sisters; and two brothers. Dolores was formerly employed at Chadband’s Jewelry in Bloomington. She was a member of Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal and a past member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Fort Wayne. Dolores was a fan of Notre Dame, playing cards and enjoying the sunshine. Dolores and Joseph lived in Scottsdale, Arizona for 38 years. The family would like to thank the staff of OSF Home Care, Martin Health Center and Dr. John Wieland of the wound clinic. Dolores was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Margaret L. Van Hook

Margaret L. Van Hook, 80, of McLean County Nursing Home in Normal, Ill., and formerly of the John Kane Homes, Bloomington, Ill., passed away at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at the nursing home. Her funeral will be at 12 p.m. Saturday (9-15-12) at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1209 W. Locust St., Bloomington, with Father Peter Zorjan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington. There will be no visitation. The family kindly requests that flowers be omitted. Memorials in Margaret’s name may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for Masses. Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements. Ms. Van Hook was born on Aug. 26, 1932 in Bloomington, a daughter of Elmer and Margaret Ringel Van Hook. Survivors include two sisters, Madeline (John) Hendrickson, Chino Valley, AZ and Rita Van Hook, Kansas City, MO; and two brothers, David Van Hook, Bloomington, IL and Fred (Ann) Van Hook, Tucson, AZ. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Her parents, a brother, Leon Van Hook, and three nephews preceded her in death. Ms. Van Hook attended Bloomington High School. She was a pre-school/day care teacher for 34½ years. Throughout her career Margaret touched the lives of many of the families she served and will be remembered and loved by the hundreds of children she taught. She was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Bloomington.
