A must win game for the Champaign Centennial Chargers did not come to fruition Friday night, as the Normal West Wildcats defeated them 52 to 37. The Wildcat victory assured their cross-town rival, Normal Community, a full Big 12 championship.
The contest began well for the Chargers, as they capitalized on a couple West mistakes on their way to doubling up the Wildcats 14-7 in the first quarter.
Normal West stepped up in the second period, ratcheting up the defense, forcing some key turnovers and outscoring Centennial 18-6 to head into the locker room with a 25-20 halftime lead.
It looked as though Centennial would be the team to respond early in the second half, as the Chargers went on a 5-0 run to tie the game with six minutes left in the third quarter. West would, however, hold Centennial to just three points for the rest of the quarter, and score 13 of their own to increase their lead to 10 heading into the final period.
The final quarter was again won by the Wildcats, as they coasted to the victory without any hiccups.
The win puts West in a tie with the Chargers for second in the Big 12 standings at a 10-5 mark.
Leading the Wildcats in scoring was Adam McGinnis with 18 pts, including Normal West’s fist 13 points. Spencer Seibring chipped in with 13.
