NORMAL - Construction is underway on the Illinois National Guard Readiness Center at Heartland Community College.
The $18 million dollar facility is expected to be completed by July 2014.
"The lower foundation has been poured. The water and geothermal well field has been installed, so we're right on target," National Guard Maj. Brad Leighton said.
The building will be the headquarters for the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
"The 404th is a very important brigade for sustaining troops in theater, but it is also important as far as homeland defense," Leighton said.
The Readiness Center will also provide classroom space and additional parking for Heartland students.
$10 million for the project was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, with the rest coming from state capital grants.
