SPRINGFIELD - Illinois lawmakers are trying to keep a lid on spending. But is running state government on $35,000 reasonable?

The budget plan Gov. Pat Quinn announced yesterday would spend $35.6 billion in general operating funds.
The House weighed in Tuesday with its own limit - but the resolution says $35,081.

Lawmakers meant $35.1 billion - or about $500 million less than Quinn wants.

The resolution sponsored by Speaker Michael Madigan omits any indication the numbers are expressed in millions. Steve Brown, spokesman for the Chicago Democrat, says the measure's intent is clear.

The legislation goes to the Senate. A spokeswoman there says a similar resolution a year ago was worded the same way, but wouldn't say whether it needed to be changed.
