AURORA - The Illinois Family Institute is outraged over a new policy that allows transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice at East Aurora High School.
IFI's Laurie Higgins says this invades the privacy of some students.
The school board passed the policy unanimously on Monday, which in some cases allows the transgender students to use the locker rooms of the gender they identify with.
Teachers and school administrators should comply with the policy even if the student hasn't had a legal change of gender or name change.
The Illinois Family Institute has started a campaign that allows parents and community members to email the school board members asking them to rescind the policy. In the meantime, the school board will convene a special meeting tomorrow to discuss rescinding the policy.
They say the goal is to implement anti-discrimination and anti-bullying policies that line up with the Illinois School Code, while still addressing the concerns of the community.
