BLOOMINGTON - Moments after Illinois Wesleyan unveiled its 2012 Men's National Semifinal banner at Shirk Center, the Titan men gave a sampling of what a Final Four team might look like.
The Titan men blitzed their way to a 14-0 lead over Loras and never looked back in a 75-63 win in the final game of the Frontier Titan Tip-off Classic at Shirk Center.
The Titans increased the lead to 44-21 by halftime. That margin ended up being their biggest advantage of the game. The Duhawks would draw as close as 11 before IWU put the game away.
Michael Mayberger followed up his game-winning free throws on Friday with a game-high 18 points off the bench. Dylan Overstreet added 13 for the 2-0 Titans.
Loras (1-1) was led by Luke Barry's 14 points.
The Titans will host Illinois College on Tuesday.
IWU women get first win
The Illinois Wesleyan women bounced back from a season-opening loss to Mt. Union on Friday to defeat Muskingum, 80-67, in the final round of the Manchester Tip-off Classic at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena in Manchester, Ind.
The Titans rallied from 10 points down at halftime and limited the Fighting Muskies to 19 second-half points.
IWU (1-1) was led by Colleen McMahon's 16 points. Lexi Baltes added 15 points and eight assists.
Illinois Wesleyan also honored former men's assistant coach David Steinbrueck, who retired after last season. Steinbrueck coached at IWU for 20 years over two stints starting in 1987 and is the only coach who was a part of all five Final Four appearances by the Titans.
