NORMAL – The Illinois State women’s basketball team used accurate shooting in the second half in its lone exhibition game of the 2012-13 season, as the Redbirds rolled past Division II Wisconsin-Parkside, 76-40, Thursday night at Redbird Arena.
Jamie Russell and Janae Smith led the offensive attack for the Redbirds, both eclipsing the double-digit mark for more than half of Illinois State’s scoring total. Russell posted a 7-for-12 shooting effort for 20 points, while Smith scored 19 points on a 9-for-15 effort. As a team, the ISU shot 47 percent from the field, pulling down 52 rebounds to UW-Parkside’s 27.
Smith got things started for the Redbirds, as she scored ISU’s first seven points, opening the game, taking a quick 7-4 lead. Illinois State maintained the momentum, as it went on a 10-0 run that lasted nearly two minutes to increase its lead to 10 points that included a three from the corner by Alison Seberger, 14-4.
The Rangers scored two-straight baskets to close the gap, 14-8, getting within six. After over two minutes of scoreless basketball, ISU took the momentum and grabbed another 10-point lead, 20-10, with back-to-back baskets from Smith and Russell with 8:45 remaining in the first half. The Redbirds took a 12-point lead, their largest of the half, with just over four minutes before the break. Wisconsin-Parkside went on an 8-2 run to pull within six, 29-23, but ISU scored four points to end the half with a 10-point lead, 33-23.
Illinois State shot 47 percent from the field in the first half, while Wisconsin-Parkside made 29 percent of their shots. Smith led all scorers with 13 first-half points, making 6-of-10 from the field. Smith also brought down five rebounds, as the Redbirds outrebounded UW-Parkside, 33-23. Russell netted eight points in the first half.
ISU came out of the break with an 18-5 run over the first four minutes of the second half, increasing its lead to 23 points, 51-28, with eight points coming from Russell. Illinois State continued to shoot well in the second half, sinking 50 percent of its shot attempts, while UW-Parkside struggled to find its rhythm, allowing the Redbirds to grab a 30-point advantage, 65-35, with just over six minutes left in the game.
The Redbirds continued to outscore the Rangers, as UW-Parkside never got closer, as ISU rolled to a win, 76-40.
With the Redbirds’ lone exhibition game complete, Illinois State is scheduled to open regular season play in the Preseason WNIT. ISU will host Morehead State, Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:05 p.m., in the Shirk Center on Illinois Wesleyan’s campus.
