Illinois State's women's basketball team was picked to finish in the top-five for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, as the Redbirds were projected to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll for the upcoming season.
Also, senior guard Jamie Russell, the league's Newcomer of the Year last season, was named to the preseason all-conference team by a vote of the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media.
ISU trailed Creighton and Wichita State in the poll. ISU received 323 votes, including two first-place votes. The Redbirds have been picked in the top-five in 19 of the 30 preseason polls in conference history. They have been picked to finish third eight times in program history.
The last time the team was picked to finish third was prior to the 2004-05 season when the Redbirds finished eighth with a 7-11 conference record.
Creighton received 382 points and 26 first-place votes, while Wichita State had 347. Northern Iowa, Missouri State and Bradley rounded out the top six teams. Along with Creighton and ISU, Wichita State was the other team to garner first-place votes with 12. Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Drake and Evansville occupy the final four spots.
