RIVER FOREST - Funeral services are this week for an American diplomat killed in an attack in southern Afghanistan.
Twenty-five-year-old Anne Smedinghoff was a foreign officer who grew up in River Forest. She attended Oak Park's Fenwick High School.
Visitation is tomorrow at an Oak Park funeral home. Wednesday's funeral Mass is at St. Luke Church in River Forest.
Initial reports said a group of Americans, including Smedinghoff, was killed while driving from a military base to deliver textbooks to a school when the explosion hit. A State Department official later said they were walking.
Gov. Pat Quinn said yesterday he plans to attend Tuesday's wake. He graduated from Fenwick and says he's honored to have shared an alma mater with Smedinghoff. Quinn's brother is a Fenwick teacher and taught Smedinghoff.
