The Bloomington Edge offense pulled away in the third quarter and held off a late challenge on the way to a 48-41 win over the Oklahoma Defenders in Champions Professional Indoor Football League play on Saturday night at the Tulsa Convention Center.
The Defenders mustered the only scoring in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead, but the Edge grabbed a 6-3 lead with 11:25 remaining before halftime on a 31-yard interception return for a score by Josh Morris. The teams traded scores for the remainder of the half with Edge touchdowns coming on a one-yard run by Andre Raymond and a 15-yard Marcus Lewis catch of a Jim DuPage pass to give Bloomington an 18-12 lead at the break.
Oklahoma took a 21-18 lead with 12:26 left in the third quarter after capitalizing on an Edge turnover, but the Edge scored four straight times to take a 42-21 lead going into the fourth quarter on touchdown receptions by Lewis of 13 and 3 yards sandwiched around a Raymond 5-yard run plus a 28-yard missed field goal return by LaVaughn Macon.
A one-yard plunge by Raymond with 10:59 remaining in the game would be the Edge's final score to put them up 48-28, but it would prove to be enough despite two more Defenders touchdowns, the last of which came with just 2:10 remaining.
DuPage was 17-of-27 for 182 yards through the air with one interception and four touchdowns. Lewis caught eight passes for 91 yards and three touchdowns and Macon registered five receptions for 109 yards while Raymond led the Edge in rushing with 10 carries for 59 yards and two scores. The Edge outgained the Defenders in total offense 263-153. Eric Tapley led the Edge defense with eight tackles while Lewis recorded seven stops.
The Edge improve to 3-3 ahead of next Saturday's game in Topeka against the Kansas Koyotes. The Defenders fall to 2-4.
