CHAMPAIGN - Authorities in Champaign say a man fleeing police fell through the ice over a retention pond and later died.

The Champaign County coroner identified the man as 20-year-old Kenneth Brown Jr. of Champaign. The News-Gazette reports that Brown died early Wednesday at an Urbana hospital. Police said officers were called to a
deli on a disorderly person report. Authorities said Brown fled and ran onto the ice when he saw officers.

Champaign Police Lt. Bob Rea said Brown fell ``right through the ice.'' Fire fighters and a dive and rescue team pulled Brown from the water Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures were about 20 degrees outside.
