NORMAL – Arion Worthman tallied five touchdowns as Class 5A No. 8 state-ranked University High School remained undefeated Friday night with a 62-0 Corn Belt Conference triumph over Pontiac at Hancock Stadium.
The Pioneers are 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference as Pontiac fell to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the Corn Belt.
"I was very happy with our execution tonight on both sides of the ball," said U-High coach Dusty Burk. "Arion is a special player and fortunately we have a lot of special players around him as well."
The Pioneers scored on their first four possessions, jumping to a 27-0 lead midway through the opening quarter. Worthman rushed for three scores, including a 4-yard scamper and a pair of 51-yard dashes. He also fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Smith. Pontiac secured its only first down of the opening half with 51 seconds to play in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Joseph Hughes broke an 85-yard touchdown run to make it, 41-0. On its next possession, Pontiac fumbled deep in its territory and McLain Engle recovered for a Pioneers score. Leading 48-0 with 9:20 to play in the second quarter, a running clock went into effect for the remainder of the game.
U-High tallied 340 yards of offense, including 249 rush yards, in the opening half, while Pontiac went into the break with just 39 yards.
Worthman, who did not play in the second half, finished 7-for-12 for 91 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He ran for 161 yards on seven carries. Defensively, Austin Galindo tallied two sacks for the Pioneers, Austin Wheeler had one interception and Malik Wildermuth returned an interception for a touchdown.
