MISHAWAKA, IN- The Normal West Wildcats were handed their third consequtive loss Friday night, in the form of a 49-21 deafeat at the hands of the Marian Catholic Knights of Mishawaka, Indiana.
The game started poorly or the Wildcats, with a quick scoring drive from the Knights, capped off with a 20 yard quarterback keeper by Vince Ravotto. Only two plays later, Normal West coughed up the ball, and a 49 yard scamper by Marian running back Michael Whitfield on the ensuing drive made the score 14-0 in favor of the Knights.
West brought the game to within a touchdown on the first drive of the second quarter, culminating with a 12 yard Brayden Moss run. However, the close game mentality was short lived, as Marian scored on two consequtive drives, heading into the half with a comfortable 28-7 lead.
The Wildcats tried to give their offense a spark by putting in passing quarterback Greg Hiltbrand in to start the second half, but all of the remaining momentum went to the Knights when the first three Normal West drives ended in turnovers. (one fumble, two interceptions) Marian's Whitfield scored on two of the three turnovers, effectively putting the Wildcats hope of a comeback out of reach.
A 57 yard touchdown run by backup running back Dominic Stevenson, and a late blocked punt made up the rest of the Wildcat's points in the contest.
West, now 5-3 on the seaon, will finish their regular season on the road next week, when they will take on the Chargers of Champaign Centennial.
