DECATUR – Normal West quarterback Alex Jefferson threw four touchdown passes and 180 yards to lead the Wildcats to a 41-14 Big 12 Conference victory at Decatur MacArthur on Friday night.
Jefferson, who completed 20 of 30 passes, threw a pair of scoring strikes to Phillip Yuncker. The first touchdown pass of 7 yards came in the second quarter to rally the Wildcats from a 7-6 deficit.
West scored the game’s first touchdown in the first quarter on a 16-yard pass from Jefferson to Matt Hunsaker. MacArthur then tied the score on a 3-yard run by Devan Ingram.
After West took the lead, there was no looking back for the Wildcats. West improved its overall and conference record to 3-0 ahead of next week’s game against Danville. MacArthur’s record dropped to 1-1 in the Big 12 and 1-2 overall.
A 23-yard touchdown pass from Jefferson to Terrance Fisher in the second quarter gave West a 20-7 halftime advantage.
MacArthur cut the deficit to 20-14 in the third quarter on a 56-yard pass before the Wildcats countered on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jefferson to Yuncker.
West sealed the win with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run by Justin Fisher-Montgomery and a 6-yard run by Dominique Stevenson. Zack Breen converted five of six conversion kicks.
“There is a lot of potential for our kids, but I told them at halftime we’ve got to get off the bus ready to play,” said West coach Darren Hess. “We dropped too many balls and didn’t execute or communicate on defense very well in the first half.
“We allowed MacArthur to stay in the game in the first half. We can’t be playing like that the next few weeks. I’m proud of the way we ran the ball in the second half. That’s the sign of a mature team to respond the way we did. We didn’t panic and played pretty well in the third and fourth quarters.”
Jefferson also paced the Wildcats with 112 yards on 11 carries, while Stevenson added 97 yards on 20 carries. Fisher had seven receptions for 63 yards and Fisher-Montgomery caught six passes for 65 yards.
“Our receivers did a great job of getting open,” said Jefferson. “And the offensive line did a great job of protecting me in the pocket. We ran the ball well early and that opened some things up for us.”
