BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington ran out of fourth-quarter magic as a potential game-tying drive stalled deep in Urbana territory, sending the Purple Raiders to a 30-22 loss in their home opener at Fred Carlton Field in Big 12 Conferernce action.
After back-to-back last-minute comeback wins, the Purple Raiders were stymied when Jake Romani’s pass deep over the middle fell incomplete on fourth down, handing the Tigers back-to-back wins over BHS for the first time since 1987.
Urbana four-year-starter Cameron Mammen added to his totals as the most prolific passer in Champaign-Urbana high school history, completing 10 of 19 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 119 yards and two scores.
Mammen put the Tigers in the lead for good late in the second quarter with an 11-yard touchdown scramble in which he ran from sideline to sideline before diving into the end zone.
Junior running back Kenny Patton also helped wear down the Bloomington defense with 129 rushing yards on 29 carries.
Emerson Evans pumped life back into the Purple Raiders with a 60-yard run to ignite a 99-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter that brought BHS within one score.
The Purple Raiders (2-1) will travel to Champaign Central on Sept. 14. The Tigers (2-1) play their next three games at home, starting with Springfield Lanphier on Sept. 14.
