NORMAL - The Illinois State men's and women's basketball teams participated in HoopFest Wednesday night at Redbird Arena. The fun-filled night included, team scrimmages, a three-point contest and dunk contest.
In the three-point shootout, Alison Seberger and Nick Zeisloft teamed up to open the competition with a score of 10, while Katy Winge and Bryant Allen combined for 13 treys. Candace Sykes and Geoffrey Allen put up a score of 13 from beyond the three-point arc. With no shootoff, the dunk contest had two champions in Winge and Bryant Allen and Sykes and Geoffrey Allen.
Moving on to the dunk contest, four Redbird men's basketball players participated in the competition. After two dunk attempts, Johnny Hill had 93 points, John Wilkins tallied 90 points, Jackie Carmichael totaled 81 points and Tyler Brown had a score of 67. Hill and Wilkins advanced to the championship round. The duo each missed all three dunk attempts, ending the contest in a draw. So, one final dunk was added. Wilkins got a 48 with his dunk, which he caught after Anthony Cousin tossed it off the side of the backboard. Hill tried twice to get an assist from the upper bowl, but ended with extra round with a basic dunk, scoring 41 points, giving the dunk contest champion title to Wilkins.
In the women's basketball scrimmage, the Red team topped the White team, 20-14. Jamie Russell led all scorers with seven points, while Seberger and Sykes each netted six points. Russell and Octavia Crump each brought down three boards, while Stekara Hall grabbed two. Janae Smithrecorded the only block in the game, while Sykes and Hall each had a steal.
In the men's scrimmage, the Red team defeated the White team, 34-30. Bryant Allen and Carmichael led all scorers with 11 points, while Geoffrey Allen sank eight. On the boards, Carmichael and Brown each brought down three, while three players each grabbed two. Kaza Keane dished out six assists. Jordan Threloff rejected one block, while six Redbirds recorded steals. The Red team outrebounded the White team, 11-6.
The women open the season on Nov. 1, as they host Wisconsin-Parkside at 6:05 p.m., while the men begin the season against Quincy at 7:05 p.m., on Nov. 5.
