ST. LOUIS – Illinois State softball catcher-infielder Elizabeth Kay is the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Kay has won the award each of the past two weeks the Redbirds have had games, and three times overall this season.
After a 19-day layoff, Kay continued to swing a hot bat over the weekend in Illinois State's MVC-opening series against Southern Illinois, hitting .625/.750/1.125 with one home run, three RBI, four walks and four runs scored. Kay extended her hitting streak to six games during the series against the Salukis, including five-straight multi-hit performances. She went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in each of the first two games, hitting a two-run home run in game two.
Kay now leads the league’s highest scoring offense in batting average (.386), home runs (6), on-base percentage (.495) and slugging percentage (.636).
The Bartlett, Ill., native continues to climb her way up the program’s all-time record books in a number of categories. She ranks in the top 15 in all-time home runs (third with 39), RBI (fourth with 149), slugging percentage (ninth with .536), runs scored (10th with 109), hits (11th with 170) and games started (12th with 193).
ISU continues its seven-game homestand Wednesday, April 3 for a 4 p.m., first pitch against Northern Illinois at Marian Kneer Stadium. After that, the Redbirds will welcome Missouri State for a three-game series, April 6-7.
