ST. LOUIS – Illinois State senior quarterback Matt Brown led the Redbirds to a dramatic 34-31 road win at South Dakota Saturday and for his efforts, he was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week by the league office Sunday.
The weekly honor is the second for Brown in his illustrious four-year career at Illinois State. He joins teammates Ben Ericksen, Jonathon Miller and Colton Underwood as MVFC weekly honorees this season.
The Marion, Ill., native became Illinois State’s all-time leader in career passing yards (8,857) and attempts (1,186) and tied the school record with his 62nd career touchdown pass in the victory over the Coyotes. Brown finished the game with 336 yards passing, including a season-long 79-yard touchdown strike to Donovan Harden that broke a 24-24 tie in the fourth quarter that put ISU up for good. Brown also rushed for a 12-yard touchdown just before halftime, his third rushing touchdown of the season.
On the season, Brown has completed 64.1 of his passes and thrown for 1,366 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Illinois State will begin a three-game homestand Saturday, Oct. 6, against in-state foe Southern Illinois for Homecoming 2012.
