ROCK ISLAND - Normal West saw its season come to an end as Rock Island avenged a first-round playoff loss to the Wildcats a year ago with a 47-10 victory Saturday in Class 6A action.
West, which finished with a 6-4 record, had five turnovers and could never get its offense untracked. Rock Island jumped to a 28-3 lead by halftime in moving its record to 8-2.
The Wildcats only trailed, 7-3, after the first quarter, thanks to a 30-yard field goal by Zach Breen with 53 seconds remaining in the quarter. Rock Island scored first on a 19-yard pass from Zach Chapman to Quintin Holmes at the 9:55 mark.
Linder Divos, who had a game-high 138 yards on 20 carries, scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 15 and 5 yards. Markel Richardson scored the Rocks' third touchdown of the quarter on a 4-yard run.
Derrick Willies caught an 18-yard touchdown pass, while Richardson and Danquan Jones added 2 and 3-yard touchdown runs in the second half.
West scored its lone touchdown with 1:04 to go on a 1-yard run by Thomas Basting. Breen added the conversion kick.
"We competed but tunovers got us in the first half," said West coach Darren Hess. "You can't give a team like Rock Island that many chances."
Basting completed 8 of 12 passes for 76 yards and rushed for a team-high 44 yards on six carries. Matt Hunsaker caught 8 passes for 106 yards.
