LEROY- Shane Bruning ran for five touchdowns and 146 yards and the LeRoy Panthers improved to 8-0 after trouncing Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland 49-12 on senior night in a Heart of Illinois Conference matchup.
Bruning got the scoring started for the Panthers with a 15 yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. F.C.W trimmed the lead to 7-6 after Alec Dutko connected on a 65-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Bertsche, but LeRoy came right back returning the ensuing kickoff 90-yards to retake the lead, 14-6.
The second quarter was all Bruning as the senior tailback had touchdown runs of 5, and 6-yards. Alec Dutko connected with his brother Austin for a 47-yard touchdown to make the score 28-12 at half.
The second half was all LeRoy as the Panthers extended their lead to 35-12 after a 1-yard plunge by Shane Brunning in the 3rd quarter. Cory Eastham ran in from 4 yards to widen the lead to 42-12, and Brunning capped off the night with a 53-yard touchdown run to give the Panthers the lead 49-12.
"Shane's done a good job for us all year," LeRoy head coach B.J. Zeleznik said after the game.
The win puts LeRoy in a conference tie for first place with Tri-Valley. The two teams will finish off their regular season looking to keep their winning streak going, and more importantly, an HOIC championship when they face off next Friday night.
"Our goal was to get to 8-0 to set up an HOI championship game at Illinois Wesleyan's field next week against Tri-Valley," Zeleznik said after his team's victory. "We're very pleased."
