DALLAS - A judge has ordered Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent to wear an electronic monitor while free on an intoxication manslaughter charge in a car crash that killed a teammate.
A judge modified conditions for his continued release and lowered bond from $500,000 to $100,000 during Brent's Tuesday court appearance. Prosecutors asked that Brent wear an electronic ankle bracelet while free pending trial on in the Dec. 8 one-car accident that killed friend and Cowboys practice squad member Jerry Brown. The judge agreed.
Brent also was ordered not to consume alcohol or drive until he has a valid Texas license and was fitted with a SCRAM device that will detect any alcohol consumption. The judge warned Brent that any violation of these terms will result in him being immediately returned to jail.
Heath Harris, the first assistant district attorney, said he expected Irving police to file a case against Brent with prosecutors this week. Harris said prosecutors hope to presentt their case to a grand jury before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Brent, who has been placed on the NFL reserve/non-football illness list and won't play again this season, will not be permitted on the Cowboys' sideline for the remainder of the season, team and league sources said. He was on the sideline Sunday at Cowboys Stadium as Dallas beat Pittsburgh in overtime.
The Cowboys and officials in the NFL's offices were unaware that Brent would be on the sideline last week during the game against Pittsburgh in Dallas. Both the team and the league agree that it was not appropriate sources said.
Brent declined comment following the court hearing Tuesday.
