Peoria, IL – Two days after the Peoria Chiefs collected a season high in runs and hits against the Cedar Rapids Kernels, the Kernels returned the favor with 11 runs on 17 hits in an 11-2 win in Peoria Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Chiefs to 7-7 on the season as they finish the homestand with a 3-2 record.
The visitors jumped all over Dail Villanueva in the top of the first. Byron Buxton and Niko Goodrum worked consecutive walks to start the game and Jorge Polanco made it 1-0 with a single to left. With one out, Villanueva hit Adam Walker to load the bases and the next three Kernels delivered run-scoring singles for a 4-0 lead. Remy Jimenez put the Kernels on top 5-0 with a sacrifice fly and Buxton drew his second walk of the inning.
Beloit put the game out of reach in the fourth inning. Dalton Hicks drew a leadoff walk from Aldrete and the next three Kernels singled for a 7-1 lead. With one down, Jimenez greeted reliever Joe Scanio with a three-run triple and a nine-run Kernels lead. Goodrum singled him Jimenez for the first run allowed by Scanio this season.
The Chiefs grabbed the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Breyvic Valera doubled to start the inning and scored on a single by Jacob Walton to cut the lead to 11-2. Walton was thrown out at second base on the play to end the inning.
Villanueva (0-2) took the loss allowing six runs on four hits and three walks over just 2/3 of an inning. Aldrete allowed four runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings while also walking three. Scanio allowed a run on six hits over a career-high 3 2/3 innings while striking out two. Joe Donofrio struck out two in one shutout inning and Dixon Llorens struck out one in one shutout inning.
