SPRINGFIELD - State Treasurer Dan Rutherford will be making an announcement about running for governor next year.

Rutherford won't say what that announcement will be. But over the weekend, he asked supporters on his website and social media whether they would back him in a run for governor.

"We posted it on Sunday. We Tweeted it out that it was available. We posted it on the FanPage of Facebook and within 9 minutes of it being tweeted and posted there were 40 people already lined up," Rutherford said. "It's been a few days and we've had hundreds and hundreds of people do that."

Rutherford said he won't make any kind of announcement this year.

"I am absolutely not precluding the opportunity to run for governor. I am not going to make any announcement this calendar year. I think the public of Illinois has had enough of campaigns from this last November cycle," Rutherford said. "At the right time under the right moment, I will be making an announcement."

He would only confirm that it is something he is seriously considering.

The governor's race is in 2014.
