BLOOMINGTON - The Green Party candidate for president said the "Green New Deal" could create 25 million new jobs.
Dr. Jill Stein told WJBC's R.C. McBride and Jim Fitzpatrick Monday the plan would create jobs through sustainable green energy, and could end what she called a "crisis" in the United States.
"We're losing our jobs, our homes, our wages, affordable healthcare and higher education. Our civil liberties are under attack, and the climate is in meltdown," she said.
Stein said the Green New Deal includes an "Economic Bill of Rights" to create jobs through an employment initiative that would offer public sector jobs stored in so-called "job banks."
Stein, a Chicago native, is running with Cheri Honkala. They will appear on the ballot in 38 states, including Illinois. They will also appear as write-ins in Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, and New Hampshire.
Stein said she also wants to downsize the U.S. Military to pre-2000 levels.
"The bloated military has been doubled, but it certainly hasn't made us twice as secure. We're seeing all that blowback now in the Middle East and the fact that our own soldiers are being shot up by the Afghani soldiers they're supposed to be training in Afghanistan," she said.
Stein is a physician and has taught internal medicine.
"What kind of medicine am I practicing? I'd say I'm not practicing political medicine, because it's the mother of all illnesses," she said.
