NORMAL - It's unofficially Halloween weekend with Oct. 31 falling on a Wednesday this year, and the costumed college kids are already out in force.

Despite freezing temperatures, Normal Police Community Service officer Amanda Street said the force is always ready for a little extra activity this time of year.

"We will see an increase in activity student-wise," said Street. "It actually probably started on Wednesday night through the whole weekend, and even continuing to Halloween. This weekend will be pretty busy."

Officer Street warns weekend party goers to stay safe and smart through next weekend. Evening temperatures are expected in the lower 30s tonight through Halloween.

As for the children and children at heart of Bloomington-Normal getting their Halloween costumes ready, local authorities are preparing for them, too. Street said the unofficial holiday is often easier to handle when it falls during the middle of the week.

"It's actually a little bit easier, because if it's on a Saturday or Sunday it's more of a big deal," said Street. "Being in the middle of the week we don't foresee a whole lot of problems."

Bloomington and Normal both will hold trick or treating hours from 5 to 8pm on Wednesday. Street reminds everyone to dress warmly and carry a flashlight.
