HOFFMAN ESTATES - Gov. Pat Quinn is slated to sign legislation designed to promote the education of elementary school children about sexual assault and abuse.
The measure known as Erin's Law builds on the requirement for middle and high schools to provide sexual assault and abuse education.
Quinn is scheduled to sign the legislation Thursday at the Northwest Cook County Children's Advocacy Center in Hoffman Estates.
Under the law, schools must instruct pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students in an age-appropriate manner.
The legislation is named after sexual abuse victim Erin Merryn. She's an Illinois native who contends children must be taught how to avoid and report sexual abuse. Similar laws have been passed in other states.
