SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois State Fire Marshal is urging college students moving into apartments and dormitories to ensure there are working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Gov. Pat Quinn proclaimed Saturday ``Look Up! Pay it Forward Day'' and September as Campus Fire Safety Month.
Students should also identify emergency exits when moving into new places.
Quinn signed a law last month that requires fire sprinkler protection in on-campus dorms at public and private colleges by September 2014
``Look Up!'' was created by Kathleen Moritz in 2005 after her 22-year-old son Tanner Osborn and two others died in an off-campus apartment fire in Chicago. It prompted lawmakers in 2010 to require sprinklers in fraternity and sorority houses.
